TODAY the Monday of a 14th April 2008 was the day my Lord appeared on this realm of ours... exactly 227 years ago... His lifes teachings were that of Compassion to all, regardless of race, creed or colour....

The first 3 songs that you see above are in Sanskrit and were sung praising His arrival to our world..

In the dark age of black magic and ignorance in India, Lords Swaminarayan incarnated in the small village of Chhapaya, His father's name was Dharma-dev ; (Righteousness) and His mother was Bhakti-mata (Devotion)....

Ghynsham and His Parents

{What a wonderful combination of words to aspire to - Devotion & Righteousness}

Anyway, in those days, a girl child, (even today in some places) was considered a liability to the parents; as she leaves the parents home after her marriage, and so a boy is preferred in our still backward minded human society; they would literally drown the girl child in milk by holding her upside down in a vessel of milk as a sign of respect (for milk is considered sacred) and why would they drown the child in it... well she was "SHE"... a liability....

He stopped this from happening with His fullest of strength ...  (and girl children got to live)

Also a husband who would pass away, but, whose wife was still alive... well at those times; since the women were inferior, the society would burn (cremate) both of them at the same time, even though she was alive ! ...  burn her with him; as a sign of two souls always staying together... what pile of cow dung...!  Ohhh wait... that is actually sacred to Indians... :-)

what a bunch of fictitiously concocted make believes .... and if the wife were to die first ?... would the husband be burned alive with her...?
Oh no... man was superior then.... keep up will you...

He also stopped this from happening with His fullest of strength ... (and women got to live normal lives even after their husbands had passed)

Also in those dark times of black magic... when the cure for a sickness was sacrificing an animal... Headache... ? kill a goat, Toothache kill two... {complete nonsense...}

He also stopped this from happening with His fullest of strength ... (and announced "not even the smallest of bugs shall be harmed by my followers" - non-violence; the supreme religion)

He also got built 8 magnificent temples in various places in India and in fact one of them in Gadhpur was built by His own effort.....

Gadhpur Mandir Banavta Maharaj

This being his birthday ... I shall not dwell on his life's works any more... let this blog remain just that... his glorious appearance day...

Aarti

The 'Aarti' is a devotional serivice to the Lord to steal some of His light and store it in the flame... the flame is then considered a blessing by all the individuals by slightly touching it...  The children do the spreading....

Raas

A Raas is a devotional dance that we perform in jubilation of some joyful event... in this case, this raas was performed on the 14-4-08 in the temple of "Shree Cutch Satsang Swaminarayan Temple" in Mombasa - amidst the anniversary of the arrival of the Lord Swaminarayan...

Salute

A salute by the temple's band, on His appearance day.

Happy Birthday my love !

Very nice, Janak. And great pics and  music.

Good for Swaminarayan! :)

We need more men like that in the world! Men wIlling to stick up for womens basic needs (like life) - and the even simple kindnesses, and respect they deserve.

My cousin helped create a documentary film called White Rainbow”. It refers to the widows of India who are forced to wear white saris, and how they are mistreated. Soon coming out. Blog readers may want to look for it.

To be aware of the darkness, means we can turn it to light.
Here is a little article about some of the things that we need to turn to light. Maybe some nice man, women, or a team of people can change the following…like your Lord did.

http://www.womensenews.org/article.cfm/dyn/aid/1794/

Ritual Humiliation

Although the horrific practice of sati–requiring widows to throw themselves on their husbands' funeral pyres–was abolished in 1829, widows still undergo ritual humiliations. After the death of a husband, a woman is shorn of her bridal ornamentation; her head is shaved by the local barber and her body is wrapped in a stark white sari so she may not arouse carnal pleasures in other men.

The bright red sindoor, the red smear that a married woman wears in the parting of her hairline, is substituted by a vertical ash smear from the top of her forehead to the top of her nose. Her very presence is considered so inauspicious that even her shadow may not fall on a married woman lest her terrible fate befall the other woman.

“In India a woman is respected only if she is a mother, daughter and wife,” says Giri. “While we have come to accept death we have unfortunately not learned to accept widows.”

The 1856 Hindu Widows' Remarriage Act gave women the legal right to remarry and the Hindu Succession Act of 1956 gave women the same inheritance rights as men. Those rights, however, are rarely put into practice.

Since women in India are often married off at a young age instead of being educated, they usually lack the skills and knowledge to fend for themselves economically and fight for their basic rights.

When they arrive at Vrindavan and Varanasi, the widows find shelters that were built almost a century ago for local ashrams or religious institutions. Today, the cramped, leaky spaces–administered by local government officials–accommodate about three women each, who sleep on torn sacks.

They receive meager rations of rice and lentils only if they spend six hours singing devotional songs at the ashram. Young widows are often lured into sex in exchange for more food or money.

I think it is great Swaminarayan took care of some of the darkness in his time. A kind, wise man…looking out for God's other half of creation. I can see why so many adore him. Thanks for sharing his history. Much much more to do, and we can get it done if we all work together :)

Dear Janie… The woman and the little girls are in a similar but different temple hall than this one…. This was another rule that was set again by the Swaminarayan; ‘that men and women should worship the Lord separately'… I shall make a blog on the beautiful pictures and statues in the women's hall; if I can… indeed “Amazing” they are. (The pictures and statues in the women's hall are 3D carvings, where as in the men's hall,  they are just paintings… as you must have seen in the Raas video…

Dear Amy… My existance is but to make sisters like you, happy, happy, happy…
PS. the blog isn't complete…infact there is still one video i've got to upload… the 'Salute' video…  Please peak periodically… :-)

Thank you for sharing this information with us!  Why were the women and children separated from the men in worship?

think of the mind as water… now think of entities like anger, jealousy, greed, hate, Lust and uhmmmm…. etc.. (i'm not so good with remembering the negative : -) as vices that hinder spiritual growth….

The temple is a place where one is supposed to unite with the God within… and this only happens when the mind is still…. just as moving waters don't reflect… similarly, a mind that is unstable; doesn't reflect God… so basically, that's why i think Lord Swaminarayan made separete worship halls for male and female devotees…

Think about it… even Mosques i think have similar restrictions… Small boys and man on one side; girls and women on another…

PS.. the women and the girls had a similar 'Ras' in thier hall…  (Working on the pics  / blog of thier hall)
